When Laphonza Butler was sworn in on Tuesday as the newest senator from California — taking over the seat of the late Dianne Feinstein — she became the first out LGBTQ+ person of color to serve in the chamber. But before she took her seat, Butler’s job was helping elect other queer people to office.
On the other side of the country, the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus sang a final tribute to Feinstein, a longtime ally. She attended their first concert over 30 years ago.
