After Popeye’s new sandwich was deemed tastier than the ubiquitous Chick-fil-A hate chicken, the internet has been clucking about the notoriously homophobic fast food chain’s comeuppance.
Americans have flocked to Popeye’s after the chain launched a new sandwich on August 12 aimed squarely at their rival’s famous sandwich. Long lines are being reported all over the country as customers queue up to see if the hype is true. Some franchises are posting signs that they’ve run out of product to sell.
And the lesser known Louisiana fast food chain is celebrating their newfound popularity.

Of course Chick-fil-A’s history of homophobia has become a rallying cry as LGBT people help spread the word as an insult to the chain. While activists have fought their own skirmish against the chain, deciding years ago that it was the movement’s hill to die on after a blogger posted about the chain giving a Bible study group a few bags of free sandwiches, the chain has become a culture touchstone for conservatives.

While the LGBT boycott has only resulted in more love for the restaurant and increased sales, Popeye’s may be able to finish them off without the liberal snobbishness that’s marked the boycott. Activists says anyone who eats there is an abomination while conveniently overlooking the chain’s base of minorities and the poor – groups supposedly championed by progressives until it’s time to shame them for eating food they can afford.
But with Popeye’s better tasting offering weighing in at the same price, the chain is capitalizing off the free publicity to tout the product’s popularity. And when it comes down to it, that’s what will move people: their own self-interests.
And people are definitely interested if Twitter is any indication. #ChickenSandwichWars have been a top trending subject for days now.
But you might have to wait a while for your chance to decide yourself. The lines are so long even celebrities aren’t able to get in on the action fast enough.
