Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) – who has referred to LGBTQ+ people as “degenerates” and joked that Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg is breastfeeding his children because he’s gay – attacked Assistant Secretary for Health Admiral Rachel Levine by misgendering her… and then showed that she didn’t even know what was going on.
The rightwing National Review published an article yesterday criticizing Levine’s visit to Identity Alaska, which describes itself as an “Alaskan based nonprofit community center and health clinic that provides resources, programs, and health care for the LGBTQIA2S+ and allied community.” The National Review said that some materials available at Identity Alaska refer to people with reproductive organs that allow them to carry children as “egg producers,” which is probably meant to refer to cis women, trans men, and nonbinary people who are able to get pregnant since Identity Alaska specifically serves LGBTQ+ people.

She paused and smiled, appearing proud of herself for using a slur in front of such a large group of people.
“Mr. Levine is now praising clinics that refer to women as ‘egg producers,'” Boebert said, misgendering Levine. Levine herself didn’t even use that expression, but apparently visiting a place where they once made a brochure that said something Boebert doesn’t agree with is cause for online bullying.

“Ironic that a man who pretends to be a woman and cannot and will not produce an egg wants to reduce women to that name,” she continued, clearly not understanding that Identity Alaska was being inclusive of transgender men with that expression, not transgender women like Levine.
“Give it up, bro!” she added to make it clear that her real problem is that Levine is transgender.
Boebert’s and the National Review’s offense at the expression “egg producer” may be surprising to those familiar with the anti-transgender movement. For the past several years, it has become common for cisgender women who oppose transgender rights to refer to themselves as “large gamete producers” to stress the difference between themselves and transgender women. Some have even gone so far as to change their handles on social media to “large gamete producer” because their hatred of trans people is their defining personality characteristic.
While many of Boebert’s followers supported her attack on Levine, others called her out for her juvenile name-calling. Some pointed out that Boebert isn’t exactly a defender of women’s equality, having said that women are, by definition, “the lesser vessel” when compared to men.
