ABC’s Good Morning America threw an on-air bachelorette party this week for its lesbian co-anchor Robin Roberts. Roberts and her partner of 18 years, Amber Laign, enjoyed the tropical-themed celebration with their closest friends and family and also some of Robin’s colleagues.
On the Wednesday installment of the morning news-talk program, the soon-to-be-wed women found a beach-themed party, including an onstage cabana, complimentary tropical drinks, palm trees, a sunset backdrop, and a lifeguard chair on-set. Some of the attendees wore matching blue button-down shirts and patches featuring the couple’s initials, “RA,” People magazine reported.

After months of dating her girlfriend, she said that she “could see the future for once.”
“We know that Key West is your happy place so we threw a party with a beach theme,” actress Niecy Nash-Betts told the couple as they entered the show’s decorated set. Laign and Roberts wore white outfits and silvery sashes that said “Bride to Be” in glittering gold cursive letters.

Co-anchor Lara Spencer asked Laign how it felt to see her bride-to-be celebrating their upcoming wedding. Laign said, “Amazing! This is just incredible.” Roberts added, “This is wonderful!”
The attendees included Food Network star Carla Hall, ABC news stars Deborah Roberts, Diane Sawyer, Gayle King, and Juju Chang, People noted.
Co-host George Stephanopoulos asked Roberts, “Could 14-year-old Robin Roberts have imagined she’d be having a bachelorette party on national television?”
“Uh-uh, no,” Robin answered. “Especially to a woman.”
Roberts’s sister, Sally-Ann Roberts, also gave the couple a unique gift — a personalized cutting board inscribed with Roberts’s favorite family recipe.
“You know how much mama is blowing kisses to you right now, and now you have her recipe for rosemary chicken,” Roberts’s sister explained. The sisters’ mother died in 2012, and the gift made Robin Roberts cry.
Before the party ended, Michael Strahan then announced that the party had an additional surprise.
“It’s not a party without a cake!” he said as crew members wheeled a three-tiered cake onto the set. Gay TV personality Tommy DiDario then popped out of the cake as the group cheered and confetti rained down. The girl group En Vogue also performed for the couple.
“When @RobinRoberts and Sweet Amber have a bachelorette party on @GMA, you show up,” DiDario wrote in a tweet after the party. “Love these two so much. Couldn’t be more thrilled for their next chapter.”
Roberts and Laign began their relationship in 2005, the same year that Roberts began serving as a co-host on Good Morning America. Roberts didn’t publicly come out as lesbian until late December 2013.
In February 2022, Roberts announced that Laign, a massage therapist, had been diagnosed with breast cancer. Laign completed her chemotherapy treatment for the cancer in July 2022. The couple plans on marrying in September 2023.
