Today, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced its 2023 Golden Globe Award nominees, and it has to be said, there were precious few queers among them.

As The Hollywood Reporter notes, the 80th annual Golden Globes ceremony is set to return to NBC next month, hosted by out comedian Jerrod Carmichael, after the network declined to broadcast the 2022 show. That decision came in the way of a major Los Angeles Times exposé which found that the HFPA had zero Black members and had engaged in unethical conduct and suspect financial practices.

Since then, however, the HFPA has reportedly instituted major reforms and its voting pool is now 52 percent female and 51.5% racially and ethnically diverse.

Despite those changes, the list of 2023 nominees in both film and television is sadly lacking in LGBTQ+ representation. In the 27 categories announced Monday morning, we found a grand total of four out nominees. Jeremy Pope picked up a Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama nomination for his role in The Inspection; non-binary actor Emma D’Arcy was nominated Best Actress in a Television Series – Drama for House of the Dragon; Niecy Nash is up for Best Supporting Actress in a Limited Series for Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story; and Hacks’ Hannah Einbinder is up for Best Supporting Actress in a Musical-Comedy or Drama Series.

Meanwhile, proving once again that Hollywood loves to save the top tier awards for straight actors playing queer roles, Brendan Fraser, Cate Blanchett, and Daniel Craig all received nominations for playing queer characters.

As for LGBTQ+ inclusive content, Everything Everywhere All at Once picked up the second most nominations of any film this year with six nods (following The Banshees of Inisherin’s eight). The dazzling Tár is up for Best Motion Picture – Drama, while Abbott Elementary—which features out actor Chris Perfetti as a gay teacher in its ensemble cast—scored the most nominations of any TV series.
