A longtime GOP lawmaker in Colorado is mounting a primary campaign against Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO), citing her “embarrassing juvenile antics.”
Boebert, who is currently serving her first term in the House of Representatives, has made a name for herself with her bizarre insults lobbed at political opponents, her obsession with rightwing internet memes, and her antipathy towards LGBTQ people. And one Republican in her district has had enough.
Colorado Rep. Don Coram (R), who was first elected to the Colorado House in 2010, has turned in enough signatures to the state to mount a primary campaign against Boebert. In a statement, he thanked his supporters.
“This has been a true grassroots campaign,” he said. “I look forward to setting the record straight on the lies Lauren Boebert and her supporters have peddled.”
He was referring to how Boebert, since January, has been calling him corrupt and accusing him of voting to legalize hemp in order to “enrich” himself.
“If I wanted to make a million dollars,” Coram responded at the time, “maybe I should try ‘consulting’ for an oil and gas firm for $500,000 a year and lie about it on public filings. That seemed to have worked out for others in this race.”
He was referring to how Boebert’s husband Jayson has gotten paid nearly $1 million over the last two years from and oil and gas company for consulting work.
Coram’s campaign said that he is campaigning against Boebert’s “embarrassing juvenile antics on the national stage.”
“Enough is enough! Let’s make Lauren’s first term in Congress her last!” he said in a statement.
Still, Coram faces an uphill battle. The Republican Party’s 3rd Congressional District assembly gave overwhelming support for Boebert to be the top-line candidate in the upcoming June primary.
And Boebert hasn’t stopped calling Coram corrupt.
“Don Coram is a corrupt liberal who buddies up to Democrats every chance he gets,” her campaign said. “Corrupt Coram will be soundly defeated in the Republican primary because Congresswoman Lauren Boebert is the only conservative in this race.”
Boebert has a long history of opposing LGBTQ rights, and especially transgender rights.
She led a press conference outside the Capitol when Congress was voting on the Equality Act, where she went on an unhinged rant full of false claims about transgender pre-teens and told reporters she is raising her sons “to be men” and she is “proud of that.”
“The so-called Equality Act, which we all know is the Democrats using a play on words,” Boebert said during a media appearance this year. “There is nothing about equality in that act. If anything, it’s the supremacy for gays, lesbians, and transves-hikes.”
Last year, she showed that she doesn’t know what pronouns are while taking a dig at transgender equality, and she once took a stand against Spongebob Squarepants coming out as gay. Spongebob has yet to come out.
