Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) spent most of his career building his personal brand as a deeply religious moral scold. He said that God will punish the “depraved” United States when he learned that more teens identify as LGBTQ+ than ever. He decried “woke corporations” for supporting Pride Month and called Disney “Satanic” after it opposed Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” law. He supported a boycott of Target for selling Pride gear, calling the rainbow t-shirts proof that “the foundations of our country, the very foundations, are crumbling.”
But he has also been very loyal to former President Donald Trump, even as Trump faces 34 felony counts related to his alleged scheme to pay porn actress Stormy Daniels to keep quiet about their rumored years-long affair during his 2016 presidential campaign (and his alleged cover-up of the payment through fraudulent business records). Johnson visited Trump’s trial last week and called one of the witnesses for the prosecution “a man who is clearly on a mission of personal revenge.” Johnson added that the trial was a “sham” and a disgrace.”

“You’ve been very clear about your disdain for the hush money case, but what about the underlying alleged conduct of paying off a porn star to keep this extramarital affair quiet?” the journalist asked. “You’re a deeply religious man, moral man, does that alleged conduct cause you any concern about the former president?”
“Now look, I’m not gonna, I’m not gonna comment on that,” Johnson said before he started complaining about how the trial is impeding Trump’s presidential campaign.
On X, people mocked Johnson for refusing to answer the question.
