Lauren Boebert rages at media for covering women’s soccer after claiming to support female athletes

Conservatives have spent the last several years arguing that they don’t hate transgender people, but rather they just want to protect women’s sports by passing laws banning transgender people from participating as their gender. But often they fall short of actually supporting women’s sports in ways that would materially improve conditions for girls and women athletes.

Boebert has attacked trans women for competing as women and cosponsored and voted for a bill to deny trans students the right to join sports teams at their schools. She has also promoted such bans in the media. Now she’s mad that the media is even covering the Women’s World Cup, one of the most important women’s athletic tournaments in the world that the U.S. team won the last two times. The U.S. women’s national soccer team is currently competing.

But to Boebert, the Women’s World Cup is what she came up with as the best example of a trivial distraction for the media.

“GET THIS: The mainstream media is choosing to neglect the biggest news story of the century and instead is covering President Trump and the Women’s World Cup,” Boebert wrote angrily on Twitter. “They are NOT reporting that our alleged [president] lied to the American people and sold out the country to line his pockets with millions.”

“So much for being ‘news’ networks. Shameful!”

The “biggest story of the century” that Boebert was referring to is likely Devon Archer’s testimony in the House Oversight Committee on Monday, which hasn’t been released to the public yet. Archer served on the board of the oil conglomerate Burisma with Hunter Biden, President Joe Biden’s son. Joe Biden has long said that he has not been involved in his son’s business deals.

Archer testified that Hunter Biden was “selling the illusion of access to his father,” Rep. Dan Goldman (D-NY) said. Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) agreed with Goldman’s assessment in a statement.

“His exact testimony was that he had – Hunter Biden possessed actual experience and contacts in Washington, D.C., in the political sphere, in the lobbying sphere, in the executive branch,” Goldman said. “And that he was – that is ultimately what he was providing to Burisma.”

Republicans on the committee said that Archer was selling “the brand” of being associated with the Biden family to Burisma.

“Here’s what he said, ‘Burisma would have gone out of business sooner if the Biden brand had not been invoked because people would be intimidated to legally mess with Burisma because of the Biden family brand,'” Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AZ) said.

The testimony led to this bizarre tweet from Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA).

It’s unclear why Boebert believes this qualifies as “the biggest news story of the century,” bigger than a major international sporting event and even Donald Trump getting indicted on felony charges yesterday in connection to his attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

The four-count indictment – in the third criminal case against Trump – accuses him of mounting a months-long campaign of lies that eventually led to the January 6 insurrection, an attempt by Trump supporters to stop Congress from certifying the election for Biden. The Trump supporters stormed and trashed the Capitol, chanted for the death of Mike Pence since he was presiding over the Senate at the time, and constructed a makeshift noose outside the Capitol. The events of that day led to the deaths of five people.

“The attack on our nation’s Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, was an unprecedented assault on the seat of American democracy,” special counsel Jack Smith said. “It was fueled by lies, lies by the defendant targeted at obstructing a bedrock function of the U.S. government: the nation’s process of collecting, counting, and certifying the results of the presidential election.”
