Marjorie Taylor Greene rages at media for not buying the bizarre “Pelosi gay lover” story

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) is outraged that anyone would even question the latest rightwing conspiracy theory about House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-CA) husband having a secret gay lover who tried to kill him.

On Friday, a man broke into the Pelosis’ home and asked, “Where’s Nancy?” She wasn’t there, but her husband Paul Pelosi was. The man hit Paul with a hammer and he has been hospitalized.

While the man who was arrested in connection to the attack – David DePape – was “immersed” in rightwing conspiracy theories online, according to Politico, many on the right have created an entirely fictional narrative that DePape and Paul Pelosi were actually lovers and had gotten into a drunken fight.

Twitter CEO Elon Musk suggested that the bizarre story was true, tweeting at former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton a link to an article from a conservative website called the Santa Monica Observer. That same website claimed that Clinton was dead and had been replaced by a body double at her debates against Donald Trump in 2016.

Musk later deleted the tweet, but people on the platform called him out for spreading the misinformation in the first place and for not apologizing or tweeting a correction so that his millions of followers wouldn’t believe a baseless story that amounted to blaming the attack on San Francisco’s LGBTQ community.

The suggestion that Musk did anything wrong by spreading misinformation set Greene off.

“The same mainstream media democrat activists that sold conspiracy theories for years about President Trump and Russia are now blaming Elon Musk for ‘internet misinformation’ about Paul Pelosi’s friend attacking him with a hammer,” she said, referring to DePape as Paul Pelosi’s “friend” even though there is no reason to believe that they had a prior relationship.

“The media is source of misinformation.”

Greene has a history of gullibility when it comes to far-right conspiracy theories. She famously said on Facebook in 2018 that prominent Jewish people had caused wildfires in California with laser beams sent from space.

“they are beaming the suns energy back to Earth, I’m sure they wouldn’t ever miss a transmitter receiving station right??!!” she wrote.

“What would that look like anyway?” she continued. “A laser beam or a light beam coming down to Earth I guess. Could that cause a fire? Hmmm, I don’t know. I hope not! That wouldn’t look good for [Pacific Gas & Electric], Rothschild Inc, Solaren or Jerry Brown who sure does seem fond of PG&E.”

Greene has also become one of the top Republicans to repeat the false notion that parents and schools are forcing kids to become transgender, something that isn’t happening, claiming earlier this year that the parents of trans kids “think [having a trans child is] like a handbag.” She also claimed Democrats “want to turn your kids gay.”

Greene is one of the most prominent believers in QAnon, the ridiculous and baroque conspiracy theory that elite Democrats and celebrities – including Tom Hanks and Hillary Clinton – are engaged in a secret, international, and Satanic child sex trafficking cabal. Many tellings of the conspiracy theory include ritualistic child murder and the drinking of children’s blood in order to harvest adrenochrome to make a perpetual youth potion.

As recently as December 2020, Greene referred to an article about the conspiracy theory as a “refreshing and objective flow of information” and “accurate.”

Also in 2020, Greene suggested Nancy Pelosi be sentenced to death for not supporting Trump’s border wall: “[Pelosi’s] a traitor to our country, she’s guilty of treason. She took an oath to protect American citizens and uphold our laws, and she gives aid and comfort to our enemies who illegally invade our land — that’s what treason is. And by our law, representatives and senators can be kicked out and no longer serve in our government, and it’s a crime punishable by death is what treason is. Nancy Pelosi is guilty of treason and we want her out of our government.”

The hashtag #PelosiGayLover was trending on Twitter earlier today with many conservatives discussing the story credulously.
