Pete and Chasten Buttigieg spent Halloween night in the hospital with their infant son, Joseph August. The baby, one of a pair of twins, has been nicknamed Gus.
The out Secretary of Transportation posted a photo of him and Gus in the hospital room with the twins dressed like traffic cones.

“As you can see, we’re spending this Halloween in the hospital,” he wrote. “Gus has been having a rough go of it but we’re headed in the right direction.
“We’re so thankful for all of the love and support shown to our family these last few months. And also, for the dedicated and kind medical professionals who have helped take care of our two little pumpkins as they’ve grown stronger, healthier, and cuter.”
He did not share why the baby needed medical attention.
The twins are new additions to their family.
“For some time, Chasten and I have wanted to grow our family,” Pete posted on Twitter on August 17. “We’re overjoyed to share that we’ve become parents! The process isn’t done yet and we’re thankful for the love, support, and respect for our privacy that has been offered to us. We can’t wait to share more soon.”
Pete and Chasten “are beyond thankful for all the kind wishes since first sharing the news that we’re becoming parents. We are delighted to welcome Penelope Rose and Joseph August Buttigieg to our family,” the men announced in dual social media posts in early September.
Anti-LGBTQ people and Republicans shamelessly attacked the couple for not having children before they became parents, and after the children were born, the cabinet secretary was severely criticized for taking paternity leave. FOX host Tucker Carlson said the men were “trying to figure out how to breastfeed.”
While social media commenters swiftly criticized Carlson for his idiotic insult, Buttigieg himself also responded with characteristic classiness, calling out Carlson’s idiocy, hypocrisy, and privilege, all in the same clapback.
“In [Carlson’s] case, I guess he just doesn’t understand the concept of bottle-feeding let alone the concept of paternity leave,” Buttigieg said on MSNBC.
