The CW, or as it’s come to be known lately, the “superhero channel,” has dropped a teaser video for their upcoming series, Batwoman. Out actress Ruby Rose will star in the titular role.
The show will be the first to have an LGBTQ lead and the impact of Rose playing the iconic lesbian character has resonated in the community.
Before this, Rose was perhaps best known for playing a lesbian inmate in the Netflix women’s prison drama Orange is the New Black.
The CW describes the show as, “Armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind, Kate Kane (star Ruby Rose) soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence. But don’t call her a hero yet. In a city desperate for a savior, Kate must overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham’s symbol of hope.”

Greg Berlanti will serve as the executive producer of the Batwoman pilot episode. Berlanti is the gay TV producer who directed the 2018 gay teen comedy film Love, Simon and produced the very queer supernatural 2018 Netflix drama The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.
Rose first appeared as Batwoman late last year in The CW’s three-episode “Arrowverse” crossover event known as Elseworlds.
