Delaware is the 1st U.S. state, admitted to the Union on December 7, 1787. Its most populous city is Wilmington, and the state capitol is located in Dover.

LGBT Rights in Delaware: Same-sex marriage became legal in Delaware on July 1, 2013 under a bill enacted by the state legislature and signed into law by Gov. Jack Markell on May 7, 2013. Previously, Delaware permitted civil unions between same-sex couples under a bill passed by the legislature that took effect Jan. 1, 2012. Delaware prohibits discrimination on the basis of actual or perceived sexual orientation (since 2009) in employment, housing, public accommodations, and other areas, and on the basis of gender identity or expression (since 2013). Hate crime law includes protections based on sexual orientation (since 2001) and gender identity (2013). Delaware law permits adoption by any married or unmarried adult, including same-sex couples in a civil union or marriage.
