At least 53 trans and gender non-conforming people were lost to violence between Transgender Day of Remembrance last year and this year.

“Transgender people are some of the bravest Americans I know. But no person should have to be brave just to live in safety and dignity.”

The record year of violence against trans people didn’t stop for the holiday, with a separate murder in Miami possibly marking a record 40th violent death tallied so far this year.

I was devoted to defending the freedoms that all Americans hold dear. On this Transgender Day of Remembrance, I’m asking Congress to do the same.

The flag flew over the Iowa state capitol for 3 minutes. He says it was “one of the most egregious acts of political aggression I’ve ever seen.”

Organizations and activists discussed what the day means and expressed their feelings on the past year.

“Dehumanizing language and actions lower the barriers to this kind of senseless violence.”
