Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) is threatening to paralyze the House again by kicking out newly elected House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) and forcing Republicans to waste months fighting over who’ll replace him — just like they did last October.
Far-right conservatives oppose Johnson’s $1.6 billion budget deal with Democrats announced earlier this week. The deal would honor pre-agreed-upon cash amounts for funding the federal government, thus averting a shutdown in the coming weeks.

In a scathing op-ed, LGBTQ Nation Heroes nominee Melissa Gira Grant urges us to ask ourselves how we didn’t see someone like Johnson coming.
“[The agreed-upon budget] includes hard-won concessions to cut more billions … from the IRS giveaway and the COVID-era slush funds, it replaces accounting gimmicks from the prior [Fiscal Responsibility Act] agreement, and it brings Congress much closer to regular order, which is our big commitment here,” Johnson said, according to NY1.com.

Nevertheless, his deal has angered far-right House members who wanted to use negotiations and a shutdown to eliminate federal agencies’ pro-abortion and LGBTQ+ policies. Johnson said he has tried to take those members into consideration while figuring out the deal.
“When I became speaker, I committed to decentralizing the speaker’s Speaker’s office and making this a member-driven process,” he continued. “In keeping up with my commitment to bring members into the legislative process, I’ve spoken and received feedback this week from many members all across the Republican conference. That’s a very important part of this.”
However, that’s not how Greene sees things.
“Right now, Mike Johnson is getting rolled in meeting after meeting after meeting,” she recently said while speaking on the War Room broadcast of anti-LGBTQ+ former advisor to President Donald Trump, Steve Bannon. “Every day Mike Johnson gets closer and closer to this deal brings me closer and closer to vacating the chair because I have absolutely had it.”
If she gets her way, America could experience a repeat of last October. Back then, House Republicans ousted then-Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) because he worked with Democrats to pass a stopgap funding measure to prevent the federal government from shutting down.
The House remained virtually paralyzed for seven weeks after McCarthy’s ouster, while Republicans unsuccessfully nominated three other candidates for House Speaker — all opposed by far-right House members — until they finally voted in Johnson, a politician with a long anti-LGBTQ+ record.
Greene isn’t the only one who wants Johnson out.
On Tuesday, Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) told Fox News, “Speaker Johnson is doing all the same stupid crap that we opposed [with McCarthy.]” While Roy said he considered Johnson a friend, he added that he has a lot of friends.
