Lil Nax X is clapping back at Christian rappers who have taken issue with his turn toward religious themes in his music.

Last week, the “Old Town Road” rapper posted a preview of a new song along with the caption, “Y’all mind if I enter my christian [sic] era?”

The down-tempo, reflective track is something of a stylistic departure for Lil Nas X, but it still managed to be characteristically provocative.

“Making christian music does not mean i can’t suck d–k no more. the two are not mutually exclusive. i am allowed to get on my knees for multiple reasons,” he wrote in a subsequent post on X.

While fans praised the song and Lil Nas X’s “growth,” he also received plenty of criticism, with one X (the social media platform formerly known as Twitter) user posting that that’s “not how Christianity works.”

“Y’all see everything i do as a gimmick. when in reality im just an artist expressing myself in different ways,” the artist responded. “Whether im a cowboy, gay, satanic, or now christian y’all find a problem! y’all don’t police nobody else art like mine. y’all hate me because im fun cute and petite.”

Fans and trolls weren’t the only ones responding to Lil Nas X’s new track. “God is not to be played with,” actor and singer Tyrese Gibson wrote in an Instagram post, accusing the “Montero” singer of making a mockery of Christianity. “Do what makes you happy but yall [sic] better stop playing with Jesus out here.”

“This really crazy cuz all i did was post a song about asking god for hope when you feel hopeless and yall acting like I posted a video of me burning a church down and peeing on a nativity scene,” Lil Nax X posted in response.

Rapper Holy Gabbana wrote in a recent Instagram story, “If Nas X wanna be gay cool, do u lil bra jus don’t title yaself a Christian and make others believe it’s okay for us to live in habitual/intentional sin.”

Lil Nas X responded to that comment as well: “It’s really insane how yall pretend some of our pastors aren’t getting piped down before the sunday service,” he wrote on X. “yall do not know jesus personally stop trying to gatekeep him.”

He also blasted critics who described his 2021 debut album Montero as “satanic.” The video for the album’s lead single, “Montero (Call Me By Your Name),” featured Lil Nas X sliding down a stripper pole to Hell and giving an actor dressed as the devil a lap dance. The rapper also collaborated with art collective MSCHF on a custom pair of unofficial Nike sneakers featuring a pentagram and an inverted cross, and which were reportedly made with ink mixed with a drop of human blood.

“The devil is mentioned ONE time throughout my entire last album and the line is ‘tell the the devil i wont have him inside, i know everything’s gonna be alright,’” Lil Nas X wrote in a Monday post. “y’all have spent this entire last week rewriting history over me releasing a snippet.”

Christian rappers Bryson Gray and Tyson James even went so far as to record diss tracks responding to Lil Nas X’s new song. In his track, Gray describes Lil Nas X as “a gay demon” and accuses him of “pushing homosexuality on our kids.”

“I got somethin for @LilNasX,” James wrote in a November 30 post on X. “REPENT!”

The “Industry Baby” rapper responded to James’ track by clowning him for posting the song less than 24 hours after he posted the preview of his own new material. “No way u at the big age of 57 years old went into the studio wrote, produced, recorded, and shot a music video for an ass diss song to me because of a snippet i posted 9 hours ago,” Lil Nas X wrote. “I really got yall on a leash.”

On Wednesday, Lil Nas X continued to make light of the backlash. “I made one snippet about wanting god to give me hope a few days ago and already like 5 christian rappers have conceptualized, wrote, recorded, and shot music videos in their grandma’s basements for diss songs about me,” he posted. “We really back.”
