Lil Nas X’s Halloween costume has caused a bit of a stir, dividing fans on social media and leading to an online dust-up with an anti-trans influencer.

Never one to shy away from provocation, the rapper hit the streets on October 31 dressed as a bloody tampon. Video posted to Lil Nas X’s official Instagram account shows him strutting down the sidewalk in his costume, holding a long white string coming out of a large painting of a vagina.

On TikTok, Lil Nas X posted another clip of him bursting through the painting while rapping.

Fans were split in their reactions to the get-up. The vast majority saw the humor, while some even saluted the “Old Town Road” singer for his “normalizing” acknowledgment of periods.

Still, others accused Lil Nas X of misogyny.

“This is so wrong you don’t even know wat we go through every month just gone laugh at our pain,” one Instagram user commented on the post.

“Not funny. Actually quite misogynistic. And being gay does not give u pass,” another wrote.

Anti-trans influencer Oli London was one of those critics, commenting on Instagram that the costume was a “mockery of women.”

London also reposted screenshots from the video on X. “Singer Lil Nas mocks women by dressing as a giant bloody tampon for Halloween,” he wrote, taking issue with the fact that the singer’s post had already received nearly 500,000 likes.

“My brother in xenu, u had surgery to look south korean for the rest of your life,” Lil Nas X responded on X. “I was a c*** tampon for 1 halloween. Please perish.”

London, who is white, drew media attention and widespread criticism in 2022 when he publicly identified as “trans-racial” and admitted to having extensive cosmetic surgery to look like South Korean pop stars. He also came out as transgender in mid-2022 before announcing later that same year that he had converted to Christianity and detransitioned. He has since reinvented himself as an anti-trans activist and social media troll.

Lil Nas X followed up his sick burn on London with another X post, dismissing the whole Halloween costume controversy.

“I been silent for nearly 2 years y’all are not finna pretend to be mad about a tampon costume,” he wrote. “Let me at least get new music out first.”
