While some House Republicans – including Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) – are pushing for Donald Trump to be made speaker of the House now that Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) was removed from the position, his out lesbian niece Mary Trump explained exactly why he wouldn’t be getting that job.
“Donald will not replace Kevin McCarthy as Speaker,” she wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, in response to Rep. Troy Nehls’ (R-TX) call for Trump to be made speaker. “Being Speaker requires work.”

Last night, eight Republicans led by Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) voted for a motion to vacate that removed McCarthy from the speakership. Since Republicans have a very narrow majority in the House – and since Democratic Congressmembers generally don’t vote for Republican speakers and vice versa – all it took was those eight to remove him from the position. He has already said that he will not seek the speakership again.
Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-NC) – a longtime opponent of LGBTQ+ rights – has already been named acting House speaker to serve until someone else can get elected speaker. Pretty much every Republican would have to vote in favor of the new speaker for that person to get the position, making it unclear how long it will take Republicans to find someone who can appease the fractured party.
