Self-described comedian Walter Masterson recently trolled the anti-LGBTQ+, pro-book banning, “parents’ rights” extremist group Moms for Liberty by reading sexually violent passages from the Bible at a recent board meeting for the Central Bucks School District in Pennsylvania.

The school district board, which has been infiltrated by right-wing candidates backed by Moms for Liberty, has also been accused of creating a hostile environment for LGBTQ+ students.

“I brought with me today a book that is available to children of all ages in the school’s library,” Masterson said while speaking into a microphone at the meeting. “This book is filled with overt sexual acts of violence, it celebrates mass killings, and it’s being used to indoctrinate our children.”

He then offered to read some passages from the book so that listeners could tell him whether they considered the book appropriate for children.

“The Lord tried to kill Moses but Sephora used a sharpen stone and cut off their son’s foreskin and rubbed the bloody ring on Moses his feet, saying ‘You’re now my bridegroom.’ This made the Lord leave Moses alone,” Masterson said, citing Exodus chapter 4, verses 24-26.

“If a slave owner beats a slave, male or female, with a stick so severely that the slave dies, immediately the slave owners should be punished. However, if the slave survives a day or two, he should get back to work. The slave is the owner’s property,” he said, citing Exodus chapter 21, verses 20-21.

“The Lord regretted ever creating human beings and He was sad. So the Lord said, I will wipe all of the human race off the face of the earth, and while I’m at it, I’ll kill the livestock and the crawling things too. Even kill all the birds in the sky. I will say never created any of them in the first place,” he said, citing Genesis chapter 6, verse 7.

“Do you think a child should be reading this book, full of sexual violence and genocide? Books don’t belong here at all,” he added. “Ban this book. Let’s focus on science, math, and raising administrators’ pay.”

Numerous progressives have cited similar Bible verses to point out the hypocrisy of pro-book-banning policies that seek to censor less explicit, LGBTQ+-inclusive texts while allowing the Bible to remain on school bookshelves.

His final comment referred to the Republican-led school board’s recent decision to raise the salary of pro-book-banning district superintendent Dr. Abram Lucabaugh from $229,500 to $315,000, despite paying district teachers lower than than market standard. He is now the second-highest-paid superintendent in the state.

Lucabaugh has embraced the school board’s right-wing majority and its policies forbidding Pride flags, banning LGBTQ+-inclusive books, and restricting classroom discussion of LGBTQ+ issues. He personally advocated for removing the young adult resource, This Book Is Gay, because it contains sexual advice and mentions hook-up apps.

“There is absolutely no reason for anyone to engage students in conversations about their sexual habits, their sexual preference, or their sexual orientation,” Lucabaugh said during a late July school board meeting. “And if you think it’s acceptable, this is your notice, I’m gonna come for you.”

Pennsylvania has the second-highest number of Moms for Liberty members in the nation, behind Florida, according to The Keystone. Its chapter in Bucks County has the highest membership in Pennsylvania. Its members have backed the school board’s right-wing members and anti-LGBTQ+ policies.

Masterson has referred to Moms for Liberty as “Moms Against Literacy,” “Klanned Karenhood,” and “the Minivan Taliban” — all references to the group’s Christian extremism. In June, the Southern Poverty Law Center (SLPC) listed Moms for Liberty as an extremist group.

“Moms for Liberty activities make it clear that the group’s primary goals are to fuel right-wing hysteria and to make the world a less comfortable place for certain students – primarily those who are Black, LGBTQ, or who come from LGBTQ families,” the SLPC wrote in its report about the group.

In October 2022, the ACLU of Pennsylvania filed a federal complaint alleging the district had created a “hostile environment” for LGBTQ+ students. The federal Department of Education is currently investigating the ACLU’s claim.
