Thousands of Mexicans poured into the streets to celebrate Wendy Guevara last night after the transgender former sex worker won a nationwide vote to win La Casa de los Famosos. She became the first trans person to triumph on the popular reality show, in a sign of support for transgender rights.

The celebration shut down streets in the capital city as LGBTQ+ people danced alongside fans in several neighborhoods. Dozens of other cities also saw hundreds of people take to town squares to demonstrate support for the popular social media influencer.

While Peruvian singer and former pro soccer player Nicola Procella came out as pansexual on the show last month, garnering worldwide media coverage, Guevara bested him during the finals. Procella came out to Guevara and bisexual singer Apio Quijano live on television.

Captured on city cams, the roar of crowds across the city could be heard for kilometers.

Guevara became an influencer as she documented her life as a sex worker while still showing #TransEsBello, the Spanish translation for the popular hashtag sparked by American actress Laverne Cox, #TransIsBeautiful. Last week, Beyoncé brought the internet to tears when she used the phrase during a concert; this week, Guevara’s win brought it nationwide popularity in Mexico.

“Through different mediums, Wendy has told her story and brought awareness to the important struggles she has faced as a trans girl in a transphobic, lgbt+phobic, violent, unequal and discriminatory society,” one popular Instagram account wrote in a congratulatory post. “Trans people have always existed, but their voices and stories have been ignored.”

“Today, in a transphobic Mexico, Wendy Guevara, not only won a reality show, she won another step in the fight against transphobia.”
