Discussing a poll about transgender people in sports, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) made it clear that her issue isn’t about protecting cis women in sports from trans women but about attacking trans women as people.
“The American people are SICK and tired of the trans cult ruining women’s sports and corrupting our children,” she wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter. “The numbers prove it.”

The poll that she linked shows that a majority of Americans are against transgender equality in sports; 33% either support or have no opinion about trans girls and women playing school sports with their gender, while 67% oppose it.
Republicans (93%) were much more likely than Democrats (45%) or independents (67%) to oppose trans equality in sports.
Despite how most of the rhetoric around pushes to ban trans girls and women from playing sports as their gender centers around fairness for cisgender girls and women, women were generally less likely to oppose trans girls and women participating in school sports, with only 59% opposing it while 75% of men opposed it.
The poll was conducted by the conservative media outlet The Center Square, which ran a story on the poll that referred to transgender girls and women as “biological males.” The results are similar to a poll conducted by Gallup several months ago.
Still, the poll doesn’t show that transgender people are “ruining women’s sports” when nearly every person playing in women’s sports at all levels is cisgender. Moreover, the idea that trans people are “corrupting our children” isn’t supported by anything in the poll and is likely just a reference to the false anti-LGBTQ+ stereotype that LGBTQ+ people molest children.
Greene has a long history of anti-LGBTQ+ and particularly anti-transgender rhetoric. She has made opposing LGBTQ+ equality one of the centerpieces of her tenure in Congress, even introducing a bill that would ban gender-affirming care for trans youth and make it harder for adults to obtain by banning any federal money from being spent on supporting gender-affirming care. Greene has attempted to add anti-transgender provisions to numerous budgetary bills to prevent federal agencies from even posting about LGBTQ+ rights on social media. She has demonized transgender women as threats to cisgender women and believes cis women have a right to not share gender-segregated spaces like restrooms with trans women.
While many Americans will say in polls that they oppose transgender equality when it comes to school sports, LGBTQ Nation’s John Gallagher argues today that this hasn’t translated into electoral success because “bread-and-butter issues matter more” to most voters who don’t follow online culture war battles.
