Mark Sahady made a name for himself as an anti-LGBTQ+ activist in 2019 when he was one of the lead organizers of the Straight Pride Parade in Boston. But he might not be able to organize another one.

Sahady has been indicted in connection to the January 6, 2021 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol and is facing a charge of obstruction of an official proceeding, a felony that carries a maximum sentence of 20 years, in addition to other charges.

Sahady is vice president of the rightwing organization Super Happy Fun America, which organized the straight pride in Boston and whose motto is “It’s Great to be Straight.” He has ties to white supremacist organizations.

The Department of Justice (DOJ) says that Sahady started tweeting statements about how he believed that President Joe Biden stole the 2020 presidential election shortly after that election.

In January 2021, Super Happy Fun America’s account tweeted, “Bus 1 of 11 coming to Washington DC. See you there!” along with a picture of a group of people that included Sahady. The buses, according to the DOJ, brought 300 people to D.C. for the Capitol insurrection.

Shortly after the insurrection, Sahady was arrested and charged with two misdemeanors: entering or remaining in a restricted building or grounds without lawful authority as well as disorderly and disruptive conduct in a restricted building or grounds. The indictment, filed last week, adds a felony charge. The charge of remaining in a restricted building carries a maximum sentence of one year in prison, and the disorderly conduct charge carries up to six months in prison.

Super Happy Fun America’s website says that it’s a “civil rights organization focusing on defending the Constitution, opposing gender madness, and defeating cultural Marxism.” “Cultural Marxism” is the antisemitic conspiracy theory that claims that academics are trying to undermine Western culture.
