Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) claims Democrats are lying to voters by saying that Republicans want to take away abortion and marriage equality, two specific actions she supports and one of which Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) proposed in the Senate earlier this week.

Speaking on the Real America podcast with Dan Ball, Greene said that Democrats “believe the way to drive people to the polls is by scaring them.”

“They’re lying to women all over America saying they can’t have an abortion anymore, which that’s a lie,” she said. “There’s plenty of places that women can easily get an abortion.”

While it’s true that abortion remains legal in many states, Sen. Graham proposed a 15-week abortion ban earlier this week in the Senate.

“If we take back the House and the Senate, I can assure you we’ll have a vote on our bill,” Graham said at a press event. “If the Democrats are in charge, I don’t know if we’ll ever have a vote on our bill.”

Greene’s own campaign website lists “END ABORTION IN AMERICA” as one of her top issues. In that section, she refers to abortion as “the genocide” of “the unborn” and brags about support she has received from organizations that seek to ban abortion.

Greene also accused Democrats of lying to LGBTQ people about Republican opposition to marriage equality.

“They’re lying to gay Americans, saying that Republicans are trying to take away gay marriage, when that’s not something- I haven’t even seen a bill that says anything like that,” she said.

Democrats who have been discussing marriage equality these past few months haven’t been saying that Republicans are trying to pass a bill to ban it. They were instead alarmed by Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas’s concurring opinion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, where he said that the Court should extend the reasoning that overturned Roe v. Wade’s guarantee of a federal right to an abortion and “reconsider” Obergefell v. Hodges, the 2015 decision that legalized marriage equality.

Congressional Democrats have been trying to pass the Respect for Marriage Act, which would require the federal government and other states to recognize same-sex and interracial marriages performed at the state-level if Obergefell is overturned. Most Republicans in Congress oppose the measure, including Greene herself.

“I believe that marriage is between a man and a woman and that’s how God created it,” Greene said as she voted against the measure.

Her campaign website lists “DEFEND TRADITIONAL FAMILY VALUES” as a top issue for her. In that section, she brags about the 100% score she got from the anti-LGBTQ hate group Family Research Council, an organization that opposes marriage equality and promotes conversion therapy.
