A Republican lawmaker tried to attack “Hollywood” for making Superman bisexual in an upcoming comic book, but she didn’t quite make the statement she intended.

“Superman loves Louis Lane. Period,” wrote Arizona Sen. Wendy Rogers (R) in a tweet yesterday, after DC Comics announced on Coming Out Day yesterday that Clark Kent’s son Jon Kent will kiss male journalist Jay Nakamura. “Hollywood is trying to make Superman gay and he is not.”

Rogers then suggested that the new, gay Superman be called “Thooperman,” a joke about how “Superman” sounds when said with a stereotypical gay lisp.

The tweet from Wendy Rogers, transcribed in the article. I took a screenshot since she will probably delete it at some point.

She didn’t really understand what was going on, though. DC Comics is publishing the upcoming comic book, not “Hollywood”; the Superman who kisses a boy is Jon Ken, the son of Clark Kent, so it’s his mother who is Lois Lane; “Louis” is a stereotypically male name, so saying Superman loves Louis Lane isn’t exactly saying that he’s heterosexual.

If anything, her comments sound like the old anti-gay battle cry, “It’s Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve,” except she forgot which side she’s on.

The replies on Twitter were vicious.
