The Republican State Leadership Committee drew instant blowback from the internet after the group tweeted a Pride message to “LGBTQ+ Republican state leaders.”

There are no out Republican Party leaders at the state level. A handful of out Republican politicians serve as state legislators.

“In honor of #PrideMonth this June, we want to thank our LGBTQ+ Republican state leaders for fighting for freedom and equality for all. Your work is not overlooked,” the group tweeted before Twitter responded.

Republican state legislators and party officials have worked frantically to pass legislation targeting LGBTQ people and civil rights laws over the past year. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) held a ceremony at a Christian school on the first day of Pride month to sign a bill banning transgender girls from participating in school sports.

“Ok this absolutely is the funniest tweet of the day,” Madison V. King responded.

“Ahh yes the Republican Party, the Party known for equality for all,” another shot back.

Rob Major added, “This is a ultra-rarefied level of cynical trolling that I didn’t think was possible.”
