Lil Nas X’s new song, “Sun Goes Down,” comes out on Friday and the out artist is teasing the internet with tidbits about the release. It appears the song will reference his struggles in the closet.

Nas came out when his first song was #1 on the charts and his last track, “Montero (Call Me By Your Name),” includes explicitly gay lyrics. The video raised the hackles of the religious right when he gave a lapdance to Satan.

“in the “sun goes down” video i go back in time to visit a younger version self who’s struggling inside, hating himself, & doesn’t want to live anymore,” Nas tweeted yesterday. “i try my best to uplift him. can’t wait to share this song and video with you guys on friday. this one is really special to me.”

Last month the rapper took to Twitter to chastise his critics who said he was leaning into his sexuality to sell records.

“Y’all love saying I’m being gay for success but can’t name five successful gay male artists in the last 10 years to save your life,” Nas tweeted.

He also liked a tweet that read, “I notice a lot of gays keep pushing this ‘Lil Nas makes his whole artistry about being gay’ narrative and it’s like. y’all stan cishet men and women who rap about their sexuality 24/7 yet when a fellow gay does it there’s a problem?”

“If you hate yourself just say that!” the user added.

Fans reacted with glee that a new song would drop soon with pledges to download and stream it as soon as the song was available.
