I know that I could probably write “Donald Trump a terrible human being” several times a day, but here he’s showing just how deep callousness is in the conservative psyche.
In addition to the cuts at the E.P.A. and the State Department, Mr. Trump’s team is expected to propose a wide array of cuts to public education, to transportation programs like Amtrak and to the Department of Housing and Urban Development, including the complete elimination of the $3 billion Community Development Block Grant program, which funds popular programs like Meals on Wheels, housing assistance and other community assistance efforts.
Meals on Wheels gets food to people who can’t go out and get it themselves. It’s a program that makes people healthier and improves their lives. It’s also often the only human contact some people get.
In addition to feeding the elderly, a major part of Meals on Wheels is people with HIV/AIDS who can’t get their own food. According to Christopher Muhammed, a Meals on Wheels volunteer in Boston, over half of their clients are living with HIV/AIDS.
Of course, a billionaire who never had to worry about where his next meal would come from would have trouble understanding the importance of this program. He and his pals at Mar-a-Lago might wonder why everyone doesn’t just send out their butlers to get them food.
Meals on Wheels is just one of many programs the White House has suggested cutting to free up money for the military and for Trump’s border wall. He also wants to cut funding to scientific research and public broadcasting.
Republicans in Congress are working hard to take away health care access from poor people in order to give rich people a tax break. Trump picked a Secretary of Labor who opposes any attempt to have a decent minimum wage. So letting people go hungry in a wealthy country that’s full of food isn’t really surprising.
But, hey, at least that neoliberal sell-out Hillary Clinton didn’t win! I’m sure she would have done the same thing.
