Supporters say gender-neutral restrooms also would help parents with children of a different gender and adults caring for aging parents.

Rylan Flesch, a transgender student at the university, said the restroom change is “progress,” adding that it “shows that the university cares.”

The move comes in the wake of protests and boycotts over Target’s earlier statement supporting the rights of transgender people to use the restroom that corresponds with their gender.
