WASHINGTON — Liz Cheney, daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, said Monday she is abandoning her effort to unseat Republican incumbent Sen. Mike Enzi of Wyoming.

INDIANAPOLIS — Mary Cheney is coming to Indianapolis to help raise money to fight a proposed amendment banning gay marriage.

The dispute roiling one of the most prominent families in the Republican Party highlights a central factor in the growing acceptance of legal same-sex marriage: knowing someone who’s gay.

The debate between sisters Liz and Mary Cheney over the issue of same-sex marriage erupted on the public stage again Sunday, when U.S. Senate candidate Liz Cheney, appearing on Fox News, reiterated her opposition to same-sex marriage.

“I believe the issue of marriage must be decided by the states, and by the people in the states, not by judges and not even by legislators, but by the people themselves.”
