WASHINGTON — The lawyer who argued before the Supreme Court in favor of upholding California’s ban on same-sex marriage learned while he was handling the case that one of his children is gay and now is helping her plan her wedding with another woman.

Supporters of California’s Proposition 8 — the 2008 voter approved ban on same-sex marriage — urged the U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday to preserve the state’s definition of marriage as between one man and one woman, the first of many arguments the high court will hear this year on the issue of marriage equality.

SAN FRANCISCO — Supporters of California’s ban on same-sex marriage are petitioning a review by the entire Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals after a three-judge panel of the court ruled the marriage ban as unconstitutional.

SAN FRANCISCO — A panel of federal appellate justices signaled Thursday that they see no reason to overturn a ruling against California’s same-sex marriage ban due to the trial judge not disclosing his long-term relationship with another man.

The seven-member California Supreme Court on Tuesday seemed troubled, in much the same way a federal appeals panel was troubled last January, to find which power should prevail on whether the “Yes on 8” group should be granted standing to defend the state’s ban on same-sex marriage.

On Tuesday, Sept. 6, the California Supreme Court will hear arguments as to whether there is any authority under California law that gives Yes on 8 the right to appeal a ruling that struck down the state ban on same-sex marriage when state officials decided not to.

It now seems unlikely that a federal judge will vacate a landmark decision in which a gay judge ruled that Proposition 8 is unconstitutional.
