Donald Trump Jr used the Super Bowl as an opportunity to promote the wild conspiracy theory that former First Lady Michelle Obama is secretly a trans woman.

“I found this rare Michelle Obama rookie card,” Trump Jr. posted to Instagram with a picture of a male NFL player.

“Insane levels of racist misogyny on Don Jr’s Instagram page,” journalist Aaron Rupar wrote in posting a screenshot of Trump Jr’s post.

“Deer [sic] fact checkers I’m told that this is a joke, so please treat it accordingly though I personally am not 100% sure,” Trump Jr. wrote in the caption of his post.

The bizarre conspiracy theory that Obama is a trans woman — despite being a mother of two, and despite being one of the best-known women in the country for eight years with no one from her past coming forward to support the claim — has been an article of faith among the extreme far-right for years.

When DeAnna Lorraine appeared on conspiracy theorist Alex Jones’s InfoWars web broadcast in 2020, she claimed that Obama was not only a trans woman but had an “eight-inch rubber snake in her pants” and that her transgender status is part of a larger “psyop” the government uses to keep people in control.

Many on the right have also treated calling her a “man,” a trans woman, or a “tr***y” as a joke for years to attack her.

Last year, anti-LGBTQ+ activist Matt Walsh promoted the conspiracy theory on his show, saying, “Michelle Obama is a man.” For evidence, he cited how Obama doesn’t have her pronouns in her social media bio, how she has “broad shoulders” and a deep voice, and how MAGA rock star Ted Nugent also believes that Obama is trans. Walsh claimed he was joking and then told his listeners to look up “footage” of Obama themselves online.

Others have called the conspiracy theory — or “joke,” depending on how it’s being told — out as racist and misogynist since Black women’s womanhood and feminity are often questioned and criticized.

For example, just last week RuPaul’s Drag Race season 8 winner Bob the Drag Queen’s image was used by a parody account on X called Poo Crave.

“Former First Lady Michelle Obama announces presidential bid for 2024,” the account wrote with a picture of Bob.

“I love a good joke as much as the next person,” Bob responded. “Everyone knows that, but this… this reeks of transphobia and misogynoir. I don’t like it.” “Misogynoir” refers to the combination of racism and sexism directed at Black women.
