Marjorie Taylor Greene praises Donald Trump’s plan to force kids to learn traditional gender roles

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) is leading the House Republican effort to ban gender-affirming care for transgender people and has made opposition to deviating from traditional gender roles central to her political brand. Now she’s praising Donald Trump for his plan to make life harder for LGBTQ+ people and to ensure that children are indoctrinated at school on “the things that make men and women different and unique” as part of his 2024 campaign platform.

“I absolutely love President Trump because he believes in protecting children from the radical lefts and gender lies and genital mutilation surgeries,” Greene wrote on X, sharing a screenshot from Trump’s “Agenda 47,” or what he promises to do if elected president next year. “I support his Agenda 47 and have a bill all ready to go to PROTECT CHILDREN!”

“The left-wing gender insanity being pushed on our children is an act of child abuse, very simple,” Trump’s Agenda 47 says, adding that this is his plan “to stop the chemical, physical, and emotional mutilation of our youth.”

Trump promises to rescind President Joe Biden’s “cruel policies on so-called ‘gender-affirming care’ – ridiculous,” although the document doesn’t say what policies it’s referring to. The Biden administration’s position on gender-affirming care has been that it is a decision to be made by patients with help from their families and healthcare providers.

Trump also promises to issue an executive order requiring all federal agencies to stop “programs that promote the concept of sex and gender transition at any age,” again not specifying what those programs are. He then says that he’ll push Congress to pass a federal ban on gender-affirming care for transgender minors.

“It’ll go very quickly,” Trump promises, adding that he wants to make the Department of Justice “investigate Big Pharma and the big hospital networks to determine whether they have deliberately covered up horrific long-term side-effects of ‘sex transitions’ in order to get rich at the expense of vulnerable patients.” This is a reference to the right-wing conspiracy theory that doctors are pushing kids to transition just so that the doctors can make more money, which there is no evidence for.

Then Trump gets to education policy. He says that he will impose “severe consequences” on any teacher who “suggests to a child that they could be trapped in the wrong body,” a response to another rightwing myth that teachers are turning kids transgender behind their parents’ backs.

His agenda would go beyond opposition to trans people existing, though, saying that he would create a “new credentialing body for teachers” – currently, states credential teachers, not the federal government – to “promote positive education about the nuclear family, the roles of mothers and fathers, and celebrating rather than erasing the things that make men and women different and unique.”

Conservatives usually oppose increased federal control of education, but Greene and Trump appear to approve of the Department of Education having this power. Elsewhere in his Agenda 47, he says that the credentialing body will only “certify teachers who embrace patriotic values” to “support our way of life.” He also promised to fire Department of Education employees who are “radicals, zealots, and Marxists.”

Trump said that he would ask Congress to pass a law ending the legal existence of transgender people and another to ban trans people from participating in school sports.

Then, despite opposing the rights of parents to raise and support their transgender children throughout the document, Trump promises in a convoluted set of sentences to “protect the rights of parents from being forced to allow their minor child to assume a gender, which is new, and an identity without the parents’ consent. The identity will not be new. And it will not be without parental consent.” He then claimed that trans people have never existed “in all of human history” until “today,” which is not true.

The bill that Greene was referring to is her Protect Children’s Innocence Act, which would ban gender-affirming care for transgender minors and make accessing such care more difficult for transgender adults while also banning medical schools from teaching about gender-affirming care. The bill has been languishing in the House Judiciary Committee even though Republicans control the House and is unlikely to pass the Democratic-controlled Senate.
