Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) said in an interview that she doesn’t think Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) is smart because Ocasio-Cortez refuses to debate Greene.
Cortez is “not that smart,” Greene told the Washington Examiner while promoting her new book, MTG. “I’ve talked with her multiple times. I’ve asked her to debate me. She’s afraid of me, is clearly, clearly not competent or capable of debating me with her policies and views on climate change and the Green New Deal, which I think is pretty pathetic, as members of Congress are supposed to debate ideas.”

Ocasio-Cortez is one of the most visible and recognizable House Democrats, making her a constant target for rightwing threats and smears, which often have racist and sexist undertones. She is not a member of the House Democratic Conference’s leadership.

This is far from the first time Greene has tried to pick a fight with Ocasio-Cortez. In May 2021, Greene confronted Ocasio-Cortez and shouted at her, calling her a “radical socialist” and demanding a public debate about the Green New Deal and Ocasio-Cortez’s support for “terrorist” groups – Greene’s term – like Black Lives Matter and antifa.
Ocasio-Cortez didn’t respond to Greene and walked away.
“She’s a chicken,” Greene told reporters at the time. “She doesn’t want to debate. I don’t think the debate has been agreed to yet.”
Ocasio-Cortez, though, compared Greene to the drunks who would harass her back when she worked as a bartender.
“For me, this isn’t even about how I feel,” she said at the time. “It’s that I refuse to allow young women, people of color, people who are standing up for what they believe, to see this kind of intimidation attempts by a person who supports white supremacists in our nation’s capital.”
This past weekend, Greene said on X that the Earth’s rotation is proof that God exists.
