Out White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre couldn’t believe the question asked by Fox News reporter Peter Doocy at a recent White House press briefing.

“Does President Biden want to limit Americans to two beers a week?” Doocy asked.

Shaking her head no, Jean-Pierre stammered, “I — I — where is this coming from?” adding, “Maybe I didn’t miss you so much.”

Doocy claimed that Dr. George Koob, director of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), said, “The U.S. may soon follow Canada and recommend just two beers a week.”

Doocy asked the press secretary, “How do you guys think that’s going to go over?”

Dr. Koob’s comments on the matter appeared in the British tabloid The Daily Mail. Koob said he’s observing health outcomes in Canada after the country advised its citizens to only have two drinks per week.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is expected to re-evaluate its alcohol consumption recommendations in 2025 when it issues revised Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Currently, the USDA suggests that women drink no more than one bottle of beer, a small glass of wine, or a shot of liquor a day, and only up to two a day for men.

“If there’s health benefits [in Canada], I think people will start to re-evaluate where we’re at [in the U.S.],” Dr. Koob told the aforementioned tabloid.

To be clear, even if Dr. Koob and the USDA changed their recommendation to only suggest drinking two beers a week, it would be just that — a recommendation. Americans would still be free to consume as much alcohol as they like.

In the press briefing, Jean-Pierre responded to Doocy’s question by saying, “Let me tell you what I’m not going to get involved in: In that question right there. I have no idea. I have not seen the data. I cannot speak to this. I will leave it to the experts and not weigh in.”

Doocy commented, “The experts say two beers a week.”

She repeated, “I will leave it to the experts. I’m just not going to comment on that.”

Despite claims that alcohol can offer health benefits — such as increased cardiovascular health — Dr. Koob said that such benefits actually come from someone’s overall diet rather than the alcohol itself.

“Most of the benefits people attribute to alcohol, we feel they really have more to do with what someone’s eating rather than what they’re drinking,” Dr. Koob said. “So it really has to do with the Mediterranean diet, socio-economic status, that makes you able to afford that kind of diet and make your own fresh food and so forth. With this in mind, most of the benefits [of alcohol] kind of disappear on the health side.”

Recent studies have linked alcohol consumption to various diseases such as cancer. Dr. Koob said he consumes around two glasses of white wine per week, often a “buttery Californian Chardonnay.”
