Donald Trump told a group of gay supporters that they “don’t look gay,” and the crowd laughed at them.
Speaking at a fundraiser in Mar-a-Lago, Trump asked the crowd, “Where’s Gays for Trump?”
Several people pointed to them, some saying where they are.
“You don’t look gay!” Trump said, getting laughter from the crowd.
Someone, presumably in the Gays for Trump group, asked what Trump said and David Harris Jr. – who has denounced how “this era of woke culture” has made calling people “fa***t” seem like a bad thing – relayed Trump’s message, getting more laughter.
“We did great with the gay population, as you know…” Trump starts to say before the video ends. According to exit polls, 78% of LGBTQ voters voted for Hillary Clinton in 2016 and only 14% voted for Trump. In 2020, 81% of LGBTQ voters voted for President Joe Biden.
It’s not clear what Trump meant when he said that Gays for Trump didn’t “look gay” or what he was expecting gay people to look like. But Gays for Trump was ready to take it as praise for more easily discernible reasons: they think being or looking gay is an insult.
Gays for Trump founder Peter Boykin told Newsweek that his group “probably wouldn’t ‘look gay’ because it’s a stereotype that fits more with the typical ‘look’ of leftist LGBT.”
“Otherwise it was a suit and tie event, so unless one of us was wearing a joker suit, meh,” he said, referring to the movie character’s purple suits. The Joker is not gay.
