A German firm that manages parking structures in the city of Hanau has stirred online controversy after announcing they will dedicate some of their prime parking spaces for LGBTQ people and migrants.

The three rainbow-festooned spots are located near the entrance and are monitored with special security cameras. And based on the reactions online to the benign nod to the challenges faced by minority groups, the extra monitoring may be smart.

Twitter was abuzz as users from around the world chimed in and castigated the company for adding extra reserved spaces to the ones already singled out for pregnant people, the disabled, and the elderly.

The righteously outraged protested the “needless” spaces by demanding reserved spaces for groups like those “who have to live on bottle deposits and leftovers from garbage cans” and need to park outside of the grocery store.

Other very concerned Americans chimed in, like the former chair of the Nevada State Republican Party who insisted on knowing “how will they verify this?”

Ken Ham, the founder of the “Creation Museum” which features a giant replica of Noah’s arc, made sure to note that LGBTQ people were condemned to Hell by quoting the Bible and adding, “God will also provide a separate place for certain people.”

The idea that the publicity stunt was designed to get people talking about their prejudices and the unseen hardships other groups might face may not have registered, but it did get them talking.
