For our second annual Pride in Pictures, LGBTQ Nation asked readers to submit a meaningful photo of themselves at Pride.

We have absolutely loved seeing your joy, your glitter, your fabulous outfits, and of course, your pride. Now, we’re spending the summer sharing some of our favorite photos and stories with all of you.

What makes this photo special to you?

I’m A drag queen by the name of Ruby James Knight. I was asked to represent Cedar Valley Pridefest in Waterloo, IA at the Capital City Pridefest in Des Moines by riding in the back of my friend’s Volkswagen. It’s one thing to be in a parade, but to see so many diverse people waving and cheering as you go by fills me with so much Pride and hope! I had seen the photographer taking pictures and didn’t know at the time who he was. All I knew was the camera looked expensive. It was when the Monday morning newspaper came out that I saw [a version of] this picture in the events section [of the Des Moines Register]. I felt honored.
