Christian leader blames state of race relations on LGBT rights

Kelly Shackelford is the president of First Liberty, a conservative “Christian” legal organization dedicated to defending religious liberty from nonexistent attacks. The group represented Aaron and Melissa Klein, the homophobic owners of Sweet Cakes by Melissa, who refused to bake a wedding cake for a gay couple.

With the religious right clamboring for special exemptions from civil rights laws lately, it’s hard for a wingnut to get much traction in the media these days. With all the whackadoodle competition for evangelical hearts and dollars, a guy has to do something to stand out from the crowd.

Appearing on a conservative “livecast,” Shackelford decided to take an interesting angle to the state of race relations in America following the brutal execution of two black men by police in separate incidents this month and the attack on a Black Lives Matter protest in Dallas, Texas that left five policemen dead. He decided to use dog whistle language to blame LGBT people, according to Right Wing Watch.

“Evil will come in when there’s a vacuum, and our country is moving away from God, and as it moves away from God, there’s all kind of little tussles going on over morality because it’s sort of like God’s been pushed out of the field, and when that happens, I mean, you know, Satan’s gonna use that as his playground,” Shackelford said. “And so we’re seeing things like this racial tension and these other things that are almost being fomented.”

“We have to look at this from the spiritual level, and this is what we’re going to see if our country moves more and more away from the truth,” he continued, adding that “people need to know the Lord, and that’s the ultimate hope for turning this around and having less and less of these type of horrific things happen.”
