Does the new ‘Ghostbusters’ feature a lesbian lead character?

Paul Feig’s all-female Ghostbusters reboot just got its first official trailer on Thuesday morning, and viewers are already speculating about Kate McKinnon’s character Jillian Holtzmann. Two flirty moments in the trailer are particularly sparking excitement among fans, who wonder if they’re about to see that still-rare thing: Not just an openly gay character in a major Hollywood film, but, as Vanity Fair‘s Joanna Robinson puts it, “the instigator of the first-ever gay romance in a summer tentpole movie.”

McKinnon is Saturday Night Live‘s first openly lesbian cast member, and while she’s not necessarily playing a lesbian here, her magnetic performance is certainly inviting speculation, particularly due to one particularly saucy wink and a subtly suggestive smile.
