Missouri public schools insurer to offer coverage to same-sex spouses, families

ST. LOUIS — A Missouri public schools’ insurer will begin including same-sex spouses and their dependent children in its benefits coverage.

EducationPlus’ Cooperating School District Insurance Trust (CSD), a self-insured option available to all public school districts in Missouri, currently provides insurance benefits to 16,000 school employees, retirees, their spouses and dependents in 26 area school districts.

The announcement to include same-sex spouses and their families was made in an email to districts early this week, and comes as a result of a federal judge’s ruling last month declaring the state’s same-sex marriage ban unconstitutional.

A list of EdPlus member districts (in eight Missouri counties and two Illinois counties) can be found here.
