Study: Simply talking to people about gay marriage makes them more tolerant

It turns out that good old fashioned human-to-human conversation really can change people’s minds.

VOX reports that a new study from professors at UCLA and Columbia University found that simply talking about marriage equality with those who oppose it can help to shift their perspective in favor of equality.

In the study, Los Angeles voters who lived in precincts that supported “Prop 8,” the law that banned same-sex marriage in California until last June, were surveyed five times over the course of two months.

Research found that voters who discussed marriage equality, particularly with a canvasser who was gay or lesbian, experienced the most significant shift in favor of marriage rights for same-sex couples.
