Southern Baptist Convention leader: Gays are pawns of Satan

On “Washington Watch” on Thursday, Jerry Boykin of the Family Research Council sat down with Southern Baptist Convention leader Richard Land to discuss of Military Religious Freedom Foundation founder Mikey Weinstein, who is loathed by the Religious Right for his work against religious coercion in the military.

Boykin urged listeners to pray for Weinstein because “he could be just like the Apostle Paul, if we could ever get him to open up and see the light” and become “a tremendous asset in the Christian world.”

Land added that the Religious Right’s opponents are pawns of Satan who need deliverance: “We do need to pray for our enemies, those that oppose us, because they’re victims. Our enemy is the Devil, our enemy is that old lion that walks about seeking whom he may devour and who is the god of this age and the prince of the power of the air and he has these people in their thrall.”

The same goes for gay rights advocates who criticized the charity World Vision for reversing its policy on married gay employees, he said.

“It’s not that we hate gays, it’s that we love scripture and love gays enough to tell them what the truth is,” Land said. “And the truth is that God does not condone same-sex sexual relations, period. They are an abomination to him and if we really love these people we are going to tell them the truth.”
