Liberty Counsel’s Matt Barber compares gay adoption to having pets

WASHINGTON — Liberty Counsel’s Mathew D. Staver and Matt Barber, in their daily radio and web broadcast Tuesday, compared adoption by gay parents to having having pets.

During a discussion of legislation in several states and in the U.S. Congress that would prohibit discrimination against prospective gay parents, Barber said that gays can’t have children “through the natural biological process,” and are “basically purchasing children.”

“It’s like having little pets or something, I guess. It’s egocentric. It’s selfish and it hurts children,” he said.

Barber also cited a peer-discredited research study by University of Texas at Austin sociology professor Mark Regnerus that asserted that children of LGBT parents are more likely to engage in self-destructive behaviors, such as drug use and depression.
