Lesbian candidate called ‘ugly dyke’ in North Carolina House race

An Asheville-area Republican political operative has taken to Twitter to call Susan Wilson, an openly lesbian contender for a N.C. State House seat, “an old ugly dyke.”

The tweet came from the account of Michael F. Muller, who once managed a separate political campaign for Nathan Ramsey, Wilson’s opponent in the race to represent House District 115.

Wilson is a Victory Fund-endorsed candidate and a longtime lawyer who prosecuted child support cases for the Department of Social Services.

“Susan Wilson has only ever wanted to serve her community and help Buncombe County families.  To be faced with this kind of vicious and mean-spirited attack in the middle of a campaign for the state legislature is just incredibly disappointing,” said Tiffany Muller, vice president for political operations at the Victory Fund.

“Nathan Ramsey should disavow this attack and condemn his former campaign manager for injecting anti-gay politics into this race at the last minute,” said Muller.

Just one current member of the N.C. state legislature is openly gay, but Wilson is one of three Victory-endorsed candidates who could give the state’s LGBT community a bolder voice in Raleigh.
