Host John Oliver dedicated Sunday’s Last Week Tonight to a discussion about why the Equality Act is an important federal protection against discrimination, particularly focusing on Jack Phillips, a Colorado baker who wouldn’t make a wedding cake for a same sex wedding — even though he’d previously made cakes for a “dog wedding.”

He points out that Phillips didn’t win his case, since Colorado already has an anti-discrimination law in place. “But,” Oliver notes, “there are still way too many states that don’t have anti-discrimination laws at all… so maybe it’s time we just fixed this nationwide once and for all.”
