As Westboro protests NY gay marriage, same-sex couples are unfazed

Sunday, July 24, 2011

About a dozen protesters from the Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kan., gathered outside of Manhattan Clerks office this morning to protest the legalization of marriage equality in New York State.

Carrying signs ranging from statements such as “Fags can’t get married” to their most well known sign “God hates Fags,” the protesters were only met with joy from the dozens of couples waiting to tie the knot in front of the clerk’s office.

DNAinfo news reporter Nicole Bode interviewed one of the couples in line:

“We can thank them for attending our wedding,” said Kawane Harris, who was standing in line to get married alongside her bride, Jeanette Coleman.

“Yes, those are the only words I have for them,” Coleman added. “Protesters are present at occasions that matter. So the more, the merrier. You can’t ruin my day today. What they’re doing is not stopping what’s happening here.”

Westboro’s protests are not the only ones slated for today.

The National Organization For Marriage, along with Senator Ruben Diaz (D-Bronx), have organized rally’s across the state with the theme “Let The People Vote.” In an interview with Christian Post, NOM president Brian Brown said he expects more than 5,000 people at the rallies today.

“It’s hard to tell but the response has been amazing,” said Brown, “I think they’ll be 5,000 or possibly more at all of the rallies.”

Senator Diaz, a Pentecostal minister, in a statement issued on Tuesday, put a religious spin on the protests.

“Having had this bad law passed, we should not retreat in fear the way the Apostles did in the days after the crucifixion and before the resurrected Christ came to reveal himself,” said Diaz. “Instead, we need to maintain the same drive that the Apostles had after the resurrected Lord filled them with the Spirit.”

Counter protests are being planned by LGBT groups across the state of New York in anticipation of these rallies.

  9. Didn’t anyone tell them they were too late ? It already passed and there is nothing they can do about it. BTW Phelps was recently in my town ( Terre Haute, IN ) to protest at the funeral of a police officer killed in the line of duty. What an ass he and his congregation are ! The nerve of them thinking they represent God and the bible.

  12. Stop giving them press coverage and they will go away

Posted on Sunday, July 24, 2011 at 10:26am
  13. Does 5 people holding up 8 signs even constitute an actual protest? Or is it the press beating a dead horse and calling it news? I think every time hate groups show up it just shows exactly how small minded they really are, and how much smaller the movement is getting. I remember when these groups were much larger. 5 people. Man, If they believe that crap they put on their signs they must have gone home from that non event and just cried.

  14. good for them … the best thing to do with regards to Westboro is just ignore them.

Posted on Sunday, July 24, 2011 at 10:35am
  15. @ Merricka … Westboro has spun a very large web and will go where ever there is an gay-related event to protest … they don’t care whether it is a gay pride event or a funeral for a gay soldier.

  17. To the B@#%H holding the sign that says “THANK GOD FOR DEAD SOLDIERS”. If it wasn’t for OUR soldiers, Your A$$ would not have the freedom of speech to be able to hold your ignorant sign and if you and god hate the USA so bad, FEEL FREE to move out of it(-: To everyone in this picture—YOU ALL need to re-read your Bible cause it says ONLY god can judge.

  18. @Pami…point of fact, they don’t even have to be gay. They protest military funerals proclaiming soldiers lose their lives as punishment from God because this country supports equality for LGBT citizens.

  20. There is more to come once the sleeping majority is awakened and people get to vote on this matter its the end of gay marriage and the radical gay agenda. A Men and a women union creates life a Men with a men union is destined for AIDS nothing else.

  21. they protested a child that was killed in a freak accident in her school in Oklahoma- the Patriot Guard Riders did their thing! woo-hoo!

Posted on Sunday, July 24, 2011 at 11:40am
  22. @Ben Men and Women don’t create life only God does that and homosexuals can donate sperm to a surrogate and have a baby too. Or they can adopt one of the many children that your men and women create and then toss away like yesterdays trash. I have been married to my partner for over 5 years now and guess what NO AIDS. Bet there are some straight couples out there that have contracted the disease in that 5 year period though… have a great day : )

  23. @Censi…The Patriot Guard also made their presence known while riding in the procession of the, afore mentioned, officer in Terre Haute. The WBC group were not even a blip in that evenings news broadcast. I also give a Woo Hoo to the Patriot Guard !

  25. God Hates Westboro Church! God Hates Bigots! God Hates Fucking Morons! God Hates Those That Don’t Love Thy Neighbor As Thyself. Those are the kinds of signs I’d like to raise in their faces.

  28. It amazes me that they think they know what God wants and how he feels, as if they have sunday dinner with him every weekend.

  29. As someone who recently realized I’m bi, it’s sad and pathetic that people care this much about telling people ‘You shouldn’t be comfortable with who you are.’ Says who? If you are against people who aren’t straight, then don’t be LGBTQ. Live your life and let’s others live theirs. To be who we are and love ourselves fully is a beautiful thing. ‘The price of conformity was that everyone loved you except yourself.’

  31. It irritates me that “freedom of religion” protects groups like theirs, but gays have to fight for even the basics…

  32. The last time I checked, IE: read the bible, God does not Hate, period. Hate is a trait of the human animal, and God is above all those baser emotions that we, as humans, have.
