SAN FRANCISCO — San Francisco 49ers cornerback Chris Culliver is continuing his outreach to the LGBT community more than a year after his anti-gay remarks leading up to the Super Bowl.

NEW ORLEANS — San Francisco 49ers cornerback Chris Culliver will begin sensitivity training and education immediately after the Super Bowl following his anti-gay remarks this week, then begin volunteer work with at-risk homosexual youth nationwide.

Then, just days before the biggest game of the year, Chris Culliver gave us a striking reminder of the macho attitudes that still prevail in the NFL.The national Football League is still a long way from embracing its first openly gay player.

Dan Savage, co-founder of the It Gets Better project, said late Thursday he has “removed the (San Francisco) 49ers ‘It Gets Better’ video” from the project’s website after two of the team’s player who appeared in the video said they were unaware they were participating in a project to support LGBT youth.

NEW ORLEANS — San Francisco 49ers cornerback Chris Culliver apologized Thursday for anti-gay comments he made to a comedian during Super Bowl media day, saying “that’s not what I feel in my heart.”

Hudson Taylor, Executive Director of Athlete Ally, a leading organization working to raise awareness and end homophobia in sports, issued this statement Wednesday in response to remarks made by Chris Culliver, cornerback for the San Francisco 49ers, where Culliver tells gay players to get out of the NFL.
