A harrowing video shows a 16-year-old teen in Los Angeles, California being beaten so badly by a gang of five attackers that blood leaks through his t-shirt as they stab, punch, and stomp him on the ground while shouting racial and homophobic slurs. Police have interviewed some of the alleged aggressors in the video, though no arrests have been reported.

The teen, who has not been named in the media, ended up in a local hospital’s intensive care unit with severe injuries, including internal bleeding, a punctured lung, and a concussion. His mother believes the attack was gang-motivated against her peaceful son. She is now raising funds so she and her son can move out of the area, fearful of possible gang retaliation because she has openly cooperated with a police investigation into the attack.

“The doctor was telling me, ‘We didn’t know whether we were going to lose your son or not,'” said the teen boy’s mother, who identified herself in the press only as Frankie. “He had a tube going through his chest. They had to collapse a lung to repair the other lung. They had to take a camera in his stomach to check to see if there was anything else going on in his stomach because there was so much blood.”

The attack reportedly occurred on February 10 at a bonfire party at Dockweiler Beach within the suburban oceanside neighborhood of Playa del Rey, KABC-TV reported. Police say the attack began after the teen non-aggressively tried to help a friend, though the exact details behind the attack haven’t been released, and it’s unclear if the victim identifies as a member of the LGBTQ+ community.

“When he went to go help her up I guess the guys didn’t like it, and they came and wanted to fight, and my son didn’t want any problems,” his mother said. “The guy just pushed him, and then another guy came and they just all started attacking him – there was nothing my son could do.”

“[He has] never been in trouble, never been in a fight. He’s loved everywhere,” she added. “He’s such an amazing kid that didn’t have to go through what he went through.”

Police have interviewed the suspected attacks who are reportedly minors. The mother suspects the attack was a hate crime, though police have not classified the attack as such at the time.

A GoFundMe crowdfunding campaign to help relocate the family has raised $21,289 of its $50,000 goal as of Friday morning.
