An NYPD police officer was recently captured on video shouting an anti-gay slur over the loudspeaker from his vehicle.

Video posted to Instagram by the account skymilezz shows the police car sitting at a red light while one of the officers blares, “suck my d*ck, fa***t,” through the speaker.

The Gay Officers Action League of New York (GOAL) has since spoken out against the cop, releasing a statement that the group is “troubled and appalled” by the incident.

“We condemn such behavior because it is reprehensible and a severe violation of the trust and expectations we have for our fellow law enforcement professionals,” the statement continued. “This incident reminds us of the ongoing prejudices that persist within our society, and the ease with which some resort to hate speech. We refuse to remain silent. We are committed to ensuring that all LGBTQIA+ individuals, both within or outside the law enforcement community, are treated with respect and dignity.”

The organization said it will continue to monitor the situation as the NYPD investigates.

“We expect the results of that investigation to lead to appropriate disciplinary action in line with the NYPD’s professional standards.”

NYPD detective Brian Downey, the president of GOAL, also spoke with Gay City News about the incident and said he was “completely disgusted” and that “this is a painful moment for many of us.”

He continued, “And that’s the sentiment that I’ve gotten from my members: Anger, frustration, pain, sorrow.”

He also emphasized that he does not believe the officer’s words align with “the principles of the police department.”

Nevertheless, the GOAL statement still called on law enforcement agencies to “prioritize diversity, training and awareness.”

“We firmly state that anti-LGBTQIA+ slurs will not be tolerated within the NYPD and urge our law enforcement colleagues to unite against hatred and discrimination,” the organization declared.

A spokesperson from the NYPD also told the publication that “the department does not tolerate discrimination in any form and is committed to respectful work environments for our diverse workforce. The incident is under internal review.”
