Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel recently showcased Sen. Ted Cruz’s new book, Unwoke: How to Defeat Cultural Marxism in America, by having RuPaul’s Drag Race star Trixie Mattel read the book in a “Drag Queen Storytime” segment to a room full of children. The children absolutely hated it.

“Mr. Cruz became a four-time author with the publication of his new book earlier this week,” Kimmel said at the start of the segment. “His last book, he had to get his own campaign to buy thousands of copies to get it up the list, which is sad. So we decided that, this time, we’d help him out.”

Trixie then appears in front of a group of seated children while wearing a sparkling hot pink bodysuit, knee-high leg warmers, high heels, and a blonde bouffant wig. She skips over a book about Sleeping Beauty and the solar system before deciding to read Cruz’s book.

Trixie then reads sections of the book aloud, including one in which Cruz criticized the recently released “subpar remake” of Disney’s The Little Mermaid, claiming that the film’s defenders called its critics “racist.” Many conservatives criticized the live-action film months before it even came out for replacing the original animated film’s white heroine with Black actress Halle Bailey.

The children interrupt Trixie’s reading to say that they actually enjoyed the remake, and Mattel says she thinks that children should have the final say on whether the film was good.

Soon after, a young boy in the group tells Trixie, “I just have to say, out loud right now, [Cruz’s] book is boring.” When Mattel suggests that they skip some pages, the boy says, “Instead of skipping a page, skip a book!”

Trixie then mocked Cruz for traveling to Cancun, Mexico during February of 2021 while his Texas constituents faced historic winter storms that left many freezing and without electricity. When Trixie handed each one a copy and says they can do “whatever” they like with it, the kids all opt to throw it in a nearby trashcan.

In June 2022, Cruz complained that Disney had featured “lesbian toys” in its Toy Story spinoff film Lightyear. Though the film briefly featured a lesbian couple, it didn’t feature any “lesbian toys.”
