X users are having a field day with Elon Musk’s inability to be effectively hateful with his failure to discern between gender and sexual identity.

On Monday, seemingly in reaction to nothing, Musk posted that “The word ‘cis’ is a heterosexual slur” and “shame on anyone who uses it.”

Cisgender simply means that someone identifies as the sex they were assigned at birth, so not only is it not a slur, but it also has nothing to do with sexuality. Homosexual and heterosexual people identify as cisgender.

Many on the platform were quick to point that out, including trans activist Charlotte Clymer, who wrote, “‘Cis’ refers to gender identity, not sexual orientation, which means it’s entirely unrelated to whether or not someone is heterosexual. So, even your attempt to falsely frame it as a slur is a few degrees removed from logic.”

Others were quick to join in.

This is not the first time Musk has declared cisgender to be a slur. In June, he wrote that “the contemptible creep that manufactured the term ‘cis’ has serious problems. Ignore him.”

For the record, a cisgender woman coined the term in 1994.

Musk has amped up his public disdain of all things trans since his transgender daughter, who was 18 at the time, applied for a legal name change in 2022.

She cited the reason for the formal request as “gender identity and the fact that I no longer live with or wish to be related to my biological father in any way, shape, or form.”
